Fall Forecast is Delicious and Eventful

It just might be the perfect storm for a gleaming foliage season. According to the experts, the rainy summer followed by an early widespread frost in September may have put an end to the growing season, but created favorable conditions for a brilliant foliage season to follow. The cold nights and warm days help turn the leaves into fiery reds and vibrant oranges; blasts of colors are nearly at peak in all regions of the state as of the time of this posting.

The apple picking report is good too. Sunny September helped pump up the apple crop and the word at the local orchards is: A good healthy crop, big sweet Macs, big juicy Cortlands and well… delicious Red and Yellow Delicious apples. Local pick- your own –apple orchards dot the countryside here in the Valley.

Tourism reports are also optimistic in anticipation of one of the better fall seasons. The Institute for New Hampshire Studies at Plymouth State University, which researches tourism in NH, predicted that last fall, visitors would spend over 1.1 million dollars. This year because of the good foliage forecast the experts and businesses are hoping for more.
After a dismal June and July, August picked up speed and Labor Day went out like a lion.

Lodging, restaurants and retail businesses reported that although the Labor Day weekend began slowly, it had a strong finish- most of which was attributed to the almost perfect weather, the fact that Labor Day came late and the slight improvement in the stock market. Though businesses do not have a magic ball to predict the fall, so far the excellent prediction for foliage season has businesses feeling optimistic. Perhaps Jerry Jacobson, general manger of the Eagle Mountain House sums up expectations: “I am keeping my fingers crossed, he says.

Whatever the tourism season brings this year, the Mount Washington Valley is chock full of fall events and bargins to be had.
